Geography
At Sinnington Community Primary School, we value Geography. A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our Geography curriculum aims to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As our pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time..
Intent
Our intent is for children to :
-
Know where places are and understand what they’re like
-
Recognise how human and physical processes shape our world
-
Use maps, fieldwork, and enquiry skills confidently
-
Communicate findings using appropriate vocabulary and techniques
-
Show curiosity, critical thinking and informed opinions about global issues
-
A passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.
- The ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment.
Implementation
We implement our Geography approach through:
- In EYFS, geography is explored through maps, seasonal changes and comparisons between countries, often driven by children’s interests.
- In KS1 and KS2, geography is taught in three themed blocks per year. Each block focuses on place, process and fieldwork skills together, rather than in isolation.
- When not a main topic, geography is embedded through cross-curricular links.
- Children demonstrate understanding through quizzes, discussions and debates linked to real-world contexts, especially their local area
The National Curriculum provides a structure and skill development for the Geography curriculum being taught. Our Projects are driven by Geography (where relevant) to provide a creative approach, which reflects a balanced programme of study.
