Art & Design

At Sinnington Community Primary School, we value Art & Design. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Intent:

  • The ability to communicate visually and reflect on their own and others’ work
  • The ability to understand and use a range of materials and artistic techniques
  • Independence, initiative and originality which they can use to develop their creativity
  • A good knowledge and understanding of other artists, craft makers and designers
  • The ability to develop an appreciation for art in the world around them
  • The ability to maintain a lasting passion and a commitment for Art and Design
  • The ability to create with imagination, confidence and control

The National Curriculum provides a structure and skill development for the Art curriculum being taught. Our Projects have an Art element (where relevant) to provide a creative approach, which reflects a balanced programme of study.

Implementation:

  • In EYFS, children learn through hands-on play using a variety of materials, tools and textures both indoors and outdoors. They develop fine motor skills and experiment with colour, design and form in a creative, child-led environment.

  • From Year 1 to Year 6, we follow a progressive Art curriculum based on the Suffolk Art Scheme. Children are taught key artistic skills discretely through weekly lessons, focusing on drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, collage and textiles.

  • Each child has a personal sketchbook to explore, plan and reflect on their work. Lessons build over time towards a final piece, giving children the chance to experiment and refine their ideas.

  • Art is also used across the curriculum to enhance project work and celebrate local and national events.

  • Children study a variety of national and international artists, as well as local creatives, to broaden their cultural understanding and artistic appreciation.

  • 3 Art Week’s per year (1 per term) enables the whole school to focus on one specific area of Art with linked artists (many local) in addition to Art units throughout the year, many which are linked to class projects.
